Clara Chu

CHEW BY CHU

Born 19th April 1995, Portuguese

How do we associate our bodies with anonymous designs such as a vegetable peeler, a juicer or a funnel? Through visionary and colorful pop accessories, Clara re-imagined textures of the edible by re-appropriating mundane kitchenware and mixing mass production with the hand-crafted. Her collection idea started from her eagerness to transform an everyday object like Tupperware. She wanted to re-engineer this iconic, repeatedly casted lunch box into a form of fashion accessory. Together with traditional leather bag making techniques and transforming household objects like water bottles, ice-cube trays and jar openers, Clara portrays a playful and eccentric accessories translation.

AWARD MOTIVATION

To the finalist who presented a testament to the transformative powers of creativity. What to others is discarded trash becomes mind-expanding raw material. This project manages to transform kitchenware and household objects like water bottles, ice-cube trays and jar openers, plus the humble Tupperware lunch box, into a colorful collection of fashion accessories that are fun as they are useful, with an eccentric twist. By doing so, it gives a pop spin to the responsible art of recycling.
